Is the point that no matter what Gd does, one has the option to deny Divine Intervention?

From Paroah's point of view, believing that this magical Gd force is sending plagues upon him and his people for failing to send the Hebrew slaves ( even their most famous leader, Joseph had been a slave; they are natural slaves) is Avodah Zara. If some Mormon predicted floods and earthquakes and told us these were the works of their deity, wouldn't giving that credence be Avodah Zara?

Thus does the American worldview make idolaters, atheists and fundamentalists of us all.

So what is the message? Believe the data? Only be convinced by the right interpretation? How stout hearted should one be?
How much honor should one give to his heart?
